Aware of the challenges that the environment represents for sustainable development over the past ten
years, the Algerian State has adopeted strategies for environmental conservation in various sectors in the
last 12 years. These strategies are based on several axes, including: preservation of the water, land and
forests, the protection of sensitive ecosystems (coastline, steppe, Sahara), industrial pollution control,
waste management, protection of natural areas and animal species, etc.
The management of urban solid waste is part of the National Environmental Action Plan and Sustainable
Development (PNAE-DD) through the adoption of a National Program for Integrated Management of
household and similar waste (PROGDEM). It aims for an integrated, phased and progressive management
approach of household waste.
